Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth was on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young girl. Her aunt was a nurse, who was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to literature, theatre, and art. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay had a mother who was aware of her social circle and showed her how to utilize the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay resided in Compton during the majority of her life, but spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer and was motivated to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish inside the house that belonged to a member on the jury. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
